Godot Assets: Free Sources and Import Settings for Godot 4

Godot assets for 3D, 2D, materials, fonts and audio: free sources that import cleanly into Godot 4, the Asset Library vs art packs, and the common pitfalls.

The best free Godot assets for art come from Kenney, Quaternius, KayKit, Poly Haven and ambientCG, all of which publish files Godot 4 can import directly. Godot's own Asset Library and Asset Store are a different thing: they mainly hold addons, scripts, tools and project templates. For 3D, use GLB where you can. For pixel art, set the texture filter to Nearest before anything else.

We make Oryn, which builds Godot 4 projects, so weigh that. Godot details below come from the stable docs (version 4.7 when we read them on November 3, 2026), and source details from each source's own pages on the same day. We didn't run new import tests for this post.

The short answer

  • Addons and code: Godot Asset Store, successor to the Asset Library.
  • Art and audio: Kenney, Quaternius, KayKit, Poly Haven, ambientCG.
  • 3D format: glTF 2.0 / GLB is what Godot recommends.
  • Textures: Lossless for 2D, VRAM Compressed for 3D, Nearest filter for pixel art.
  • Audio: WAV for short repeated sounds, Ogg Vorbis for music.
  • Biggest pitfalls: model scale, a blurry filter on pixel art, and DirectX normal maps.

As of November 2026.

Asset Library vs art assets

The word "assets" means two things around Godot, and searches mix them up.

The Asset Library (often "AssetLib") is, in Godot's words, a repository of user-submitted addons, scripts, tools "and other resources". Everything on it is free and open source under licenses such as MIT, GPL or Boost, and the docs compare it to a Linux distribution's software repository more than to Unity's store.

The Asset Store at store.godotengine.org is its successor. The docs say the old library stays online, that authors must re-upload their assets because nothing moved automatically, and that the store is in beta. Its roadmap says the beta allows only free assets and that paid assets come later. Its front page on November 3, 2026 showed things like Terrain3D, Dialogue Manager, GodotSteam and Kenney's Starter Kit City Builder, all MIT-licensed.

So install terrain tools, dialogue editors and Steam integration from there, and get models, sprites and sounds from the sources below. Two things to watch if you do find art there:

  • The license shown on a store page may be written with code in mind, so check whether the art inside has its own.
  • Templates are standalone projects, and they appear in the Project Manager. Other assets go into an existing project through the editor.

Poly HavenRealisticBlend, glTF, FBX, USDCC0Realistic props

Kenney recommends GLB for Godot in its import guide, and publishes Godot starter kits with source code. Our Kenney assets post covers the steps.

Quaternius is strong on animation: Universal Animation Library 2 has more than 130 animations on a humanoid rig the page says is compatible with Godot, Unity and Unreal, and the Source version of Downtown City MegaKit includes a Godot project. Pack pages differ on formats and license, so check before you plan around one. If a pack has no glTF, Godot can open the .blend directly (with Blender installed) or use the FBX.

KayKit packs use one small atlas: the Dungeon Remastered page describes a 1024×1024 gradient texture that can be downsampled to 128×128. That makes them cheap to render, including on mobile. The downloads are on itch.io, which blocked our direct requests, so check the file list on the itch.io page.

Poly Haven is the one to use for realism. Its API listed 521 models. These are high-detail, so measure the cost before you put many in a scene, especially on phones.

Free materials, textures and skies

ambientCG releases its materials under CC0 and its API counted 2,038 of them in November 2026, in 1K to 8K, JPG or PNG. Poly Haven listed 869 textures and 997 HDRIs in its API, also CC0, and offers textures with glTF and Blender setups.

To turn a material download into a Godot material:

  1. Pick a sensible resolution

Download 1K or 2K for most surfaces. Godot's image import has a Process > Size Limit option if you've already got something bigger.

  2. Copy the maps into your project

You'll usually have color (albedo), normal, roughness and sometimes ambient occlusion and height. Godot detects textures used in 3D and switches them to VRAM Compressed with mipmaps. That compression typically cuts video memory by a factor of 4 to 6.

  3. Create a StandardMaterial3D

Assign each map to its slot. If the pack has a combined ARM or ORM texture (Poly Haven has an arm file), use ORMMaterial3D and put it in the single ORM slot.

  4. Use the GL normal map

Godot requires OpenGL-style normal maps. Poly Haven offers both, as nor_gl and nor_dx. Pick the GL one, or turn on Normal Map Invert Y in the import settings for a DirectX map.

  5. Check the tiling

Raise UV1 Scale until the pattern is the right size next to a 1.8-meter capsule. If a strong feature repeats visibly across the floor, pick a calmer material or break it up with props.

For a sky, add a PanoramaSkyMaterial to a WorldEnvironment's Sky. Godot recommends a 2:1 aspect ratio, and the image must be .hdr or .exr to benefit from high dynamic range. A 16K HDRI is large, so start at 2K or 4K. Kenney also has stylized Skyboxes.

Free 2D assets and how to import them

Kenney is the easiest start. Free sprite sheets and itch.io assets cover the wider options, and for licenses on those sites the game assets guide is worth reading first.

PNG sheets are straightforward. The image docs say Lossless compression is the default for 2D and warn against VRAM compression there, because it shows artifacts, especially on low-resolution textures. Mipmaps add about 33% to memory, and they only help 2D if the camera zooms out.

For tiles, Godot's TileSet docs list the values to enter when you add an atlas: Margins for the outer edges, Separation for gaps between tiles, and Texture Region Size for each tile. A guess that's one pixel off shifts every tile after it, so read the values from the pack's notes. Kenney includes them in tilemap.txt.

For animation, use AnimatedSprite2D and the sprite sheet option, entering the frame grid.

Fonts for Godot

Godot imports TrueType, OpenType, WOFF and WOFF2 fonts, plus BMFont bitmap fonts and images turned into fonts.

Free sources:

  • Kenney Fonts: 11 files, CC0.
  • Google Fonts: commercial use allowed per Google's FAQ. Most are under the SIL Open Font License, which requires the notice and license to travel with the font and bars selling the font on its own. Add the license file to your project.

For pixel fonts, the docs say to disable bilinear filtering by setting Default Texture Filter to Nearest, use an integer multiple of the design size, and set Subpixel Positioning to Disabled. Keep antialiasing on Grayscale in games, since LCD antialiasing can produce color fringes on OLED screens.

Free audio for Godot

Godot supports WAV, Ogg Vorbis and MP3.

FormatCPUDiskUse it for
WAVLowHighShort, repeated effects: footsteps, gunshots, UI clicks
Ogg VorbisHigherLowMusic, speech, long effects
MP3Lower than OggLowMusic on mobile or web when CPU is tight

To loop music, select the file and turn on Loop in the Import dock, then Reimport. WAV has a Loop Mode with begin and end points in samples; Ogg and MP3 offer a Loop toggle and a Loop Offset, forward only. One trap the docs mention: the finished signal never fires on looping audio.

Sources: Kenney's audio category is CC0 and mostly OGG, per its knowledge base. Freesound has Creative Commons 0, Attribution and Attribution Noncommercial, so filter by license. For music, see royalty-free game music or AI game music and sound.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Models arrive at the wrong size

Godot uses 1 unit = 1 meter, physics is tuned for that scale, and the docs recommend working at the correct scale in your modeling software instead of relying on post-import scaling. Free packs follow their own conventions, and a character at the wrong scale also gets wrong jump and gravity feel.

To check, add a 1.8-meter capsule as a reference. To fix a pack, select the file and set Root Scale in the Import dock, and keep Apply Root Scale on, so the scale goes into the mesh and animations and the root stays at (1, 1, 1). Fixing it once at import beats scaling every instance by hand. If you're editing the model yourself, apply transforms in the modeling tool before export.

glTF vs FBX

Use glTF if the pack offers it. Godot's docs recommend it, and Kenney says FBX and GLB are equal in features for its packs, with GLB smaller. FBX support is built in through the ufbx library from Godot 4.3, so you don't need the older FBX2glTF setup, which relies on an external program. After an FBX import, check three things that are easy to miss: scale, whether materials still point to textures, and animation names.

Avoid OBJ for anything but static props. The docs list what it lacks: pivots, skeletons, animations, UV2 and PBR materials. COLLADA is called an older format, and the docs say Blender's built-in COLLADA export shouldn't be used as-is. .blend import needs Blender installed on every machine that imports the project, so use GLB if you work in a team or CI.

Pixel art looks blurry

In 2D, set Project Settings > Rendering > Textures > Canvas Textures > Default Texture Filter to Nearest. In the resolution docs, the pixel art setup is stretch mode viewport with stretch scale mode integer, and 640×360 is called a good baseline because it scales cleanly to common resolutions. Integer scaling prevents uneven pixels, at the cost of black bars on some screens.

In 3D, pixel textures need two changes. Set the material's Sampling filter to Nearest. Then set Compress > Mode to Lossless, because the docs say VRAM compression hurts pixel art's appearance without improving performance much. Keep Detect 3D enabled so mipmaps stay on, and set its Compress To option to change the mode before first use.

Colors look wrong on low-poly kits

Palette atlases, where each surface samples a tiny patch of color, can bleed under compression. Kenney's fix is the High Quality option in the Import tab. Godot's docs say High Quality works only in the Forward+ and Mobile renderers. Under Compatibility, set the texture to Lossless instead. Also check that any "Texture" folder from the pack came with the model, since Kenney's guide lists missing textures as the cause of missing colors.

Surfaces light the wrong way

Bumps that seem to catch light from the wrong side mean a DirectX normal map. Godot needs OpenGL style, so use the GL version or flip the Y axis on import.

Game runs fine on desktop but stutters on phones

Check high-resolution materials and big HDRIs first, since free libraries offer them at sizes far beyond what a phone needs. Lower Process > Size Limit, use 1K or 2K textures, and prefer atlased kits like KayKit on phones. How to make a mobile game and Godot web export go further on budgets per platform.

Mixed styles

CC0 lets you combine anything, which doesn't mean it will look right. A Poly Haven scan beside a Kenney kit reads as two games. Pick one main source and use the art-style rules before you add a second.

A checklist for each new asset pack

  1. Read the license on the pack's own page, and save the file or a note in CREDITS.md.
  2. Copy one model or sheet into a test scene, with its textures.
  3. Compare the size with a 1.8-meter capsule or your tile grid.
  4. Check colors, normals and the texture filter.
  5. Set Root Scale and compression once, using the Import dock's Preset or Advanced Import Settings if you'll bring in many similar files.
  6. Only then copy the rest.

Skipping the import work

Oryn writes the Godot 4 project for you, scenes, GDScript, input maps, UI and assets, from a description you approve. It draws on a library including Kenney, KayKit, Quaternius, Poly Haven and ambientCG filtered to your chosen art style, generates art for what's missing, and gives every new game a soundtrack. You can then export the project as a .zip and open it in Godot. The trade: a first build takes about 30 minutes, you don't choose each pack by hand, and the free plan builds one game. If you enjoy working in the editor, the sources above are free. If you're weighing tools, see Godot AI and our Godot MCP guide.

Try this prompt in Oryn

“A small first-person dungeon crawler in Godot: stone corridors, torches, three rooms with a key and a locked door, and one slow skeleton enemy. Low-poly look, dark but readable lighting, keyboard, gamepad and touch controls.”

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find free assets for Godot?

For art and audio, Kenney, Quaternius, KayKit, Poly Haven and ambientCG, all free for commercial use on their own terms as of November 2026. For addons, tools and templates, use Godot's Asset Store or the older Asset Library.

What is the Godot Asset Library?

A repository of free, open-source addons, scripts, tools and other resources you can install from the editor. Godot's newer Asset Store, in beta as of November 2026, is its successor. Art packs are mainly found elsewhere.

Should I use glTF or FBX in Godot 4?

glTF, usually as a .glb file, is what Godot's docs recommend. FBX works through the built-in ufbx importer from Godot 4.3 on, so use it when a pack has nothing else, and check scale and materials afterwards.

How do I stop pixel art being blurry in Godot?

Set Default Texture Filter to Nearest in Project Settings under Rendering > Textures > Canvas Textures. For crisp scaling, use stretch mode viewport and integer stretch scale. In 3D, also set the material's filter to Nearest and the texture's compression to Lossless.

Why is my imported model the wrong size in Godot?

Godot treats 1 unit as 1 meter, and packs follow their own conventions. Compare with a 1.8-meter capsule, then set Root Scale in the Import dock and reimport.

Can I use Kenney assets in Godot?

Yes. They're CC0 and Kenney's guide recommends GLB for Godot. Copy the models and any Texture folder into your project. See our Kenney assets guide.
