What happens if my character’s HP reaches zero?

The expedition ends, you return to the guild, lose any unbanked finds, but keep rank, experience and stored rewards.

How does the companion help me?

The companion follows, attacks nearby enemies and prioritizes staying close, so good positioning prevents both of you from being surrounded.
